Walking Stick Palms grow in Queensland rainforests. The young shoots can be cooked and eaten—they taste mild and nutty. The palm’s fruits are sweet but not often eaten. The tough fibres from the palm’s stem are used to make baskets, mats or brushes. These fibres can also help ease muscle pain when used as a paste. The palm’s big leaves make good shelters from rain or sun. People also use the strong stems to make walking sticks, which is how the plant got its name.
