Beach Bird’s Eye is a small tree or bush that grows near the beach in coastal areas. It has thick, strong leaves and bright red or orange berries that look like tiny bird eyes—this is where it gets its name!
The berries aren’t usually eaten raw because they can taste bitter or might be harmful if not prepared properly. When cooked the right way, they can be used in bush tucker recipes like jams or sauces. The seeds inside the berries can also be eaten if they are roasted and treated safely.
Birds love this plant! The bright berries attract them and they peck at the fruit to get to the seeds inside.
