Large Leaf Tamarind (also called Diploglottis australis) is a rainforest tree that grows in eastern Australia, mainly in Queensland and northern New South Wales. It has big, soft green leaves and small yellow flowers. The tree produces round, orange-brown fruits with a sour but tasty pulp.
Indigenous Australians would eat the tangy flesh straight from the tree or use it to add flavour to other foods. The fruit is rich in vitamin C and is still sometimes used today to make jams and sauces.
The Large Leaf Tamarind grows best in warm, wet rainforest areas. It provides food for native animals like birds and helps keep rainforests healthy.
