Karkalla (Carpobrotus Rossii)

Also known as Karkalla (Pigface) Yulli, is a native Australian plant known for its juicy, sweet fruit and thick, fleshy leaves. The fruit looks like a small green or purple berry and tastes a bit like watermelon or cucumber with a tangy twist. It’s often eaten fresh from the plant but it can also be used to make jams, sauces or syrups.

The leaves of Karkalla are similar to succulents and contain a gel inside. This gel has been used by Indigenous Australians to treat burns, wounds and sunburn because it soothes and cools the skin. People also chew the leaves to relieve thirst or mouth sores.

Karkalla is not only a tasty bush food but also a helpful plant for staying hydrated and caring for the skin when fresh water or medicine isn’t available.
